ATHLETE WELLBEING
BEYOND PERFORMANCE
Athlete wellbeing sits at the centre of the Apex philosophy. While physical development and athletic progression are important, we believe sport should also help young people build confidence, emotional resilience, positive relationships, self-belief, and a healthy sense of identity.
Our goal is to create an environment where athletes feel supported, respected, encouraged, and safe to learn. We recognise that every athlete brings different strengths, challenges, experiences, and learning needs into the sporting environment, and we aim to foster a culture that values individual growth and positive experiences alongside performance outcomes.
As Apex continues to grow, this section of the website will expand to provide further information regarding our wellbeing philosophy, support practices, athlete-centred coaching approaches, and broader developmental frameworks.
ATHLETES FIRST
ATHLETE-CENTRED COACHING
At Apex, we believe athletes perform and develop best within environments that are positive, structured, respectful, and emotionally safe.
Our coaching philosophy prioritises encouragement, constructive feedback, relationship-building, and long-term development over fear-based coaching or perfection-driven environments. While accountability and high standards remain important, our broader goal is to help athletes build confidence, resilience, independence, and enjoyment throughout their sporting journey.
PSYCHOLOGY, LEARNING, & DEVELOPMENT
The Apex wellbeing philosophy is informed not only by coaching experience, but also by academic expertise in psychology, developmental processes, learning environments, and behavioural systems.
Founder Dr Lacey Schaefer also holds Mental Health First Aid qualifications and brings experience supporting neurodivergent learners and athletes across educational and sporting settings.
We recognise that athletes learn differently, respond differently to challenge, and progress at different rates. Accordingly, we aim to create environments that are adaptable, supportive, and responsive to individual developmental needs wherever reasonably possible.
CONFIDENCE, RESILIENCE, & PERSONAL GROWTH
Sport can play an important role in helping young people develop confidence, emotional resilience, teamwork, communication skills, independence, and healthy coping strategies.
At Apex, we aim to create opportunities for athletes to challenge themselves, experience success, navigate setbacks, and develop persistence within a supportive and professionally guided environment.
Our focus is on progress over perfection, helping athletes build skills and self-belief that extend well beyond sport alone.
COMMUNICATION & SUPPORT
We value respectful, honest, and collaborative communication between athletes, families, and staff.
Parents and athletes are encouraged to speak openly with coaching staff regarding goals, concerns, support needs, or broader wellbeing matters where appropriate. Coaches will similarly communicate proactively with families to help ensure athletes feel supported throughout their participation experience.
As Apex grows, additional information regarding athlete support practices, wellbeing initiatives, referral processes, and communication pathways will be made available within this section of the website.
